Petro’s mission for Ambassador Murillo

President Gustavo Petro officially appointed Luis Gilberto Murillo as the representative of the interests of Colombia before the United States. During the inauguration ceremony, the Head of State entrusted the diplomat with the task of “reconfiguring” a new agenda in the topics of conversation between the White House and the House of Nariño.

“The best message of a military collaboration between the United States and Colombia is that the Amazon rainforest does not burn. These types of issues are taking shape as a new agenda between the two countries, whose head is our ambassador Luis Gilberto Murillo. It is a task that has to do with saving the human species”, said Petro during the act of possession.

Murillo, Juan Carlos Pinzón’s replacement in Washington, should also lead the discussion that the government has proposed regarding a possible change in the extradition procedure and the possible shift in the fight once morest drugs.

“The armed fight once morest drugs, which has been going on since President Richard Nixon, has failed. It is our duty to the United States and the world propose alternatives that are not those of having Latin Americans dead and imprisoned, also Americans killed by overdose”.

Murillo –who was Minister of the Environment under Juan Manuel Santos– had been appointed as Colombia’s ambassador to the US on July 12.

The former governor of Chocó It was Sergio Fajardo’s vice-presidential formula in the recent presidential elections. However, following losing at the polls on June 19, he announced that his support would be for the Historical Pact.

During the act of possession, Petro also stressed that he will appoint people of African descent in some embassies in Africa and the Antilles.
