London – Queen Elizabeth has appointed Conservative Party leader Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister of Britain. After being elected as the party leader, the official appointment was made during a meeting with the Queen at Balmoral Palace in Scotland. Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson had earlier visited the Queen and handed over his resignation letter. On his return to London, Truss delivered his inaugural address from the Prime Minister’s official residence, No. 10 Donning Street.
Indian-origin Suella Braverman was announced as Home Minister. Theresa Coffey, who has been announced as Deputy Prime Minister, also has the Department of Health. Also announced were James Cleverley – Foreign Affairs, Quasi Kwarteng – Finance, Ben Wallace – Defence, and Brendan Lewis – Legal Affairs. Wendy Morton is the Chief Whip. Truss is Britain’s third female prime minister and the 15th prime minister to take office under Queen Elizabeth II. Winston Churchill, who came to power in 1952, was the first Prime Minister appointed by the Queen.
The constitutional procedure in Britain is to invite the party leader to Buckingham Palace in London. However, the 96-year-old Queen was in Scotland, so Boris Johnson and Liz Truss were invited there. This is the first such action in history.
