Microsoft warns Windows users in Chile

The Microsoft company has warned Windows users in Chile running the operating system in Client version as Server from 7 to 11 on the time change. As reported by the company, users might experience problems and some errors in various parts of the operating system, this due to the time zone change; Fortunately, it’s not a Y2K bug, so Windows users in Chile shouldn’t expect anything out of the ordinary.

All this is due to the fact that the Chilean authorities announced on August 9, 2022 that the country’s official time would advance 60 minutes on September 10 instead of on September 4.

Microsoft warns Windows users in Chile regarding the time change

As a result of the above, some devices running the Windows operating system might experience the following errors:

  • The time displayed in Windows and applications will not be correct.
  • Apps and cloud services that use date and time for comprehensive features like Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Outlook, notifications, and meeting scheduling can get 60 minutes off.
  • Automation that uses date and time, such as scheduled tasks, may not run at the expected time.
  • The timestamp on transactions, files, and records will be discounted by 60 minutes.
  • Operations that rely on time-sensitive protocols, such as Kerberos, can cause authentication errors when trying to log in or access resources.
  • Windows devices and applications outside of Chile may also be affected if they connect to servers or devices in Chile or if they schedule or attend meetings that take place in Chile from another location or time zone. Windows devices outside of Chile should not use the workaround, as it would change your local time on the device.

  • You can mitigate this issue on devices in Chile by doing any of the following on September 4, 2022 and undoing on September 11, 2022:
    • Select the Windows logo key, type “Date and time” and select Date and time settings. On the Date & Time settings page, switch Automatically adjust for daylight saving time to Off.
    • Go to Control Panel > Clock and Region > Date and Time > Change Time Zone and uncheck the option » Automatically adjust the clock for daylight saving time «.
  • To mitigate this issue in the Santiago time zone, following 12:00 am on September 11, 2022, and for those in the Easter Islands time zone, following 10:00 pm on September 10, 2022, please follow the steps below to re-enable automatic daylight saving time adjustments and ensure accurate time change with future daylight saving time transitions. This can be done by doing any of the following:
    • Select the Windows logo key, type “Date and time” and select Date and time settings. On the Date & Time settings page, switch Automatically adjust for daylight saving time to On.
    • Go to Control panel -> Clock and region -> Date and time -> Change time zone and check the option » Automatically adjust the clock for daylight saving time «.

Logically, the solution offered by Microsoft in the official documentationit only applies to users located in Chile, therefore, other users from other regions do not have to make any changes.
