What are the diseases to retire in the IMSS?

Is there a sickness pension in the IMSS?

When a worker is unable to continue working due to an illness that is not related to his work, he is requested to be assessed by medical professionals.

In case of presenting a state of disability and meeting the requirements indicated by the Social Security Law, you can request a pension in this insurance branch at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).

To do this, it is necessary to carry out medical studies that prove a state of disability for work. Subsequently, the corresponding procedure must be carried out and, in the event that it is assessed that there is disability, it will have to be determined if the insured is entitled to a pension for this reason.

To start the process, it is required to present the following documents:

  • Valid official identification. Original and Copy
  • National Health Card. Original
  • Move from the family medicine service or the second or third level specialist doctor to Occupational Health. Original
  • Study request to determine the possible state of disability (only if you have been discharged but you are in the period of conservation of rights). Original

Furthermore, according to IMSS:

  • You must have a referral pass to Health at Work, by your family doctor or the specialist doctor of second or third level of care
  • The ST-4 disability opinion is a document that must be approved and authorized by other doctors, also from Occupational Health; you may be required more than once to be clinically assessed
  • Your opinion must be authorized within a maximum of 15 business days from the date of the first appointment for opinion with complete file
  • Once your ST-4 disability opinion has been authorised, you must process the pension resolution in Economic Benefits
  • If your opinion is authorized by Occupational Health as “Yes Disability” does not necessarily mean that you will be paid a pension, since the Social Security Law establishes that in addition to presenting a state of disability you must have contributed for at least 250 weeks, or in the case of disability greater than 75%, 150 weeks. .

Illnesses to retire due to disability in the IMSS

Unlike what happens in other countries, in Mexico there is no unequivocal list of illnesses for the IMSS to grant a disability pension.

However, according to the information published by the IMSS in 2020, there are a series of diseases that commonly cause disability to continue working. In the first place, for example, is diabetes mellitus, followed by malignant and carcinogenic tumors, dorsopathies, arthropathies, cerebrovascular diseases, kidney failure, osteopathies and chondropathies, ischemic heart diseases, other heart diseases, choroidal disorders and retina, liver diseases, among others

Chronic-degenerative diseases such as diabetes are obviously causing one of the greatest financial burdens, in terms of disability pension payments to the IMSS. According to a IMSS analysis it is expected that between 2020 and 2051 there will be 61,000 people pensioned for this type of disease, with an average expenditure of 18,555 million pesos per year (data for 2020).
