Opinions are divided on this woman: During the corona pandemic, Cathie Wood with her actively managed ETFs was voted the best fund manager in the USA and the investment company Ark Capital, founded by Wood, recorded billions in investment funds.
But with the changing economic environment of skyrocketing inflation and rising interest rates, the shares of fast-growing technology and growth companies in which Cathie Wood invests with her ETFs were suddenly no longer in demand.
After a high in February 2021, Ark Innovation ETF, Cathie Wood’s flagship ETF, plummeted dramatically. Over the long term, by early 2021, Wood had outperformed the large-cap S&P 500 index and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 by early 2021 for her investors. But then the crash followed.
Meanwhile, more and more investors are abandoning the sinking ship. In August alone, the Ark Innovation ETF saw $800 million in outflows as investors sold their ETF shares. These were the highest fund outflows for the ETF since September 2021. Overall, the Ark Innovation ETF currently manages around $8.0 billion, following more than $27 billion at the high in early 2021.
