Kerala will not feature in nine events at the National Games to be held from October 29 to October 12 in six cities, including Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The setback was the poor performance at the national level. The competition is in 36 events including athletics. As per the decision of the Indian Olympic Association, eight teams, including the hosts and the seventh placed in each event in the last national championship, have the opportunity to participate in the Games. Kabaddi, yoga, tennis, lawnball, hockey, shooting, table tennis, golf and mallakampa (combination of yoga and gymnastics) will not have Kerala representation.
Confusion over competitive events in athletics, swimming, rowing and canoeing continues. Time extended for entry in athletics. In 2022, the National Games are open to those up to 16 in the ranking list prepared on the basis of the various athletic championships held in the country. Meanwhile, if more than three people are included in the ranking list in a state, only the first three people can participate. The services players were ranked by their states in the first ranking list released. However, this list had to be changed as Services has its own team. The state athletic associations received the new list only a few days ago. It is in this situation that the time for giving athletics entry has been extended. Kerala has announced a 49-member squad.
Even as preparations are underway, there is a dispute between the Indian Olympic Association and various sports federations. Many federations have approached the National Sports Ministry. Controversy and lawsuits with the Indian Olympic Association have affected the pace of organizing the National Games.
