Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived at the Zaporiza nuclear power plant in Ukraine on the 1st (local time) to begin inspections to prevent a nuclear disaster. IAEA Secretary-General Rafael Grossi was the first UN agency head to accompany nuclear inspections in the fighting area.

According to the AFP news agency, inspectors including Secretary General Grosi checked the site of the Zaporiza nuclear power plant together with a delegation of Russian state-owned nuclear power plant company Rosatom on the same day. After a tour of the nuclear power plant, Secretary-General Grosi told reporters, “It is clear that the nuclear power plant’s physical integrity has been compromised several times.” “I have no clue as to whether it happened by chance or intentional, but this should not continue,” he said. “I was concerned, I am still concerned, and I will continue to be concerned regarding the Japorija nuclear power plant,” he added.

“We spent four or five hours at the nuclear power plant, we saw a lot, and we were able to send staff to tour the entire site,” said Grosi. However, he did not say how many people will be staying. “It was able to elicit a number of questions, initial observations and initial evaluations, which will allow us to look further into the report,” he said.

The Zaporiza nuclear power plant, the largest single facility in Europe with six reactors, has been occupied by Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine war. Concerns regarding a nuclear disaster are growing as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues over the Zaporiza nuclear power plant. The nuclear power plant site was bombarded on the 5th, 6th and 11th of last month. On the 20th and 21st of last month, shells fell, damaging chemical facilities in the nuclear power plant.

The IAEA inspectorate will inspect the nuclear power plant for damage over a three-day schedule and check whether the safety and security system is operating normally.
