CAIRO, 1st September/WAM/The 110th ministerial session of the Arab Economic and Social Council approved today the economic file of the Council of the League of Arab States at the summit level at its 31st regular session scheduled in Algeria next November. The file includes a number of items, most notably the support of Arab countries hosting Syrian refugees to reduce burdens The economic and social consequences of this hosting and discussing the progress made to complete the requirements of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, and the establishment of the Unified Arab Customs Union. The file also includes an item on economic and social recovery from the Corona pandemic in Arab countries, Arab space cooperation, and the Arab strategy for the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
In the recommendations issued today at the conclusion of its session at the Arab League, the Council welcomed the measures taken by the General Secretariat of the Arab League, member states, specialized ministerial councils and joint Arab action institutions to implement the decisions of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit at its fourth session, which was held in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and to prepare for its fifth session. Which will be hosted by the Islamic Republic of Mauritania next year.
The Council assigned the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States to coordinate with the Mauritanian side in order to prepare well for the work of this summit.
The Council welcomed the actual launch of the second phase of the Aid for Trade Initiative program for Arab countries and the adoption of the first package of projects within the framework of the program for the benefit of Arab countries.
The Council instructed the General Secretariat to provide the contact points of the Economic and Social Council with the results of the coordination meetings it holds regarding the unified Arab visa agreement for Arab business owners and investors.
The Council decided to return the agreement regulating maritime transport of passengers and goods between Arab countries to the Council of Arab Transport Ministers to rename the agreement in line with its content.
The Council called on member states to submit their comments on the draft unified Arab discourse for the 2022 joint annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
