Vegan mother was sentenced to life in prison after her son died of malnutrition

A 38-year-old mother from Florida, United States, who followed a strict vegan diet was sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of his 18-month-old son in 2019.

Sheila O’Learya resident of the town of Cape Coral, in the southwest of the state, was sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison following being found guilty last June of six charges, including first-degree murder, for the death of one of their children, Ezra O’Leary.

According to the police report, the woman called the 911 emergency telephone number in September 2019 following noticing that her son was not breathing and when the authorities arrived at the house they found the minor dead, who it weighed only 8 kilos and was the size of a seven-month-old baby.

The mother and her husband, Ryan Patrick O’Learywho remains in prison awaiting trial on the same charges, told investigators that they fed their children only raw vegetables and fruits, although Ezra was still breastfed by Sheila.

Agents discovered that the couple’s other two children, ages 3 and 5, had signs of malnutrition. The mother and husband were arrested two months following the death of the minor.

According to local channel Wink, the woman’s attorney, Lee Hollandernoted that they will appeal the verdict released in a Lee County court, and which comes following the woman rejected an agreement with the prosecution state for which she was to be sentenced to 30 years in prison.
