Larry Coryell & Philip Catherine: “Twin House” (1977)

In 1977 the American guitarist Larry Coryell recorded the album “Twin House” with his Belgian colleague Philip Catherine. In the same year, Coryell released an album with compatriot Steve Khan, which also featured two acoustic guitars. And: Coryell is sometimes mentioned as the initiator of the first incarnation of the “Super Guitar Trio” with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía. However, due to drug problems, among other things, Larry Coryell left in 1980, and Al Di Meola took his place – and soon therefollowing recorded the million-seller “Friday Night in San Francisco” with his colleagues.
So back to “Twin House” by Coryell and Catherine: the music on this disc probably doesn’t sound as mass-compatible and perfectly oiled as the popular recording by Di Meola/McLaughlin/de Lucia, but musically it is considerably more interesting. The majority of the compositions are by Philip Catherine, who will be celebrating his 80th birthday on October 27, 2022. On this occasion, “Twin House”, this top-class predecessor of the “Super Guitars” constellations of the 1980s, should be remembered today.
