Al-Marsad newspaper: The family doctor, Dr. Saud Al-Shehri, revealed the effect of drinking tea and coffee on the absorption of iron from our food.
Al-Shehri indicated, in a video clip he shared with his followers, via Twitter, to a study conducted on a number of people, who ate bread and drank tea on it, and found that tea prevented iron absorption by 60 to 90%.
He pointed to a study conducted on a number of people who ate a burger and drank coffee on it, and the absorption of iron came down to nearly 60% of iron.
And he noted another study, conducted on the elderly, and it was found that drinking coffee on food reduced their iron stores by 1%.
On the contrary, Al-Shehri showed that vegetable iron is more affected by drinking tea and coffee than is found in animal sources.
Al-Shehri stressed that the caffeine in tea and coffee is not primarily responsible for preventing iron absorption, but rather the antioxidants they contain.
Al-Shehri advised people who suffer from iron deficiency to refrain from consuming tea and coffee during or immediately following eating, but preferably an hour before or an hour following.
