Lawyer for driver of crazy van in central Brussels speaks out: ‘The facts are not very clear’

Isabelle Slaets, the defendant’s lawyer, spoke to our colleagues at RTL: “Monsieur was very emotional, and we can say that he is not doing very well”, she explains. .

She clarified the facts for which her client must appear: “He is charged with attempted murder and use of a weapon by assimilation (the van, editor’s note). The track of premeditation has been dismissed”, she points out.

The lawyer also specifies that the individual is cooperating with the justice system but that any motive has not yet been determined: “For the moment, the facts are not very clear, but the investigation should make it possible to better understand what happened. Moreover, there is no indication that the mobility plan played a role in the facts. In the meantime, a psychiatric expert has been appointed. He will have to draw up a report on the mental state of my client at the time of the incident.”

Mr Slaets also adds that the man is “aware that it might have been worse and that he is relieved to know that there are no serious injuries.”

The prosecution requested to extend the preventive detention for one month. The decision is expected later in the day.
