Ubisoft Reveals PC-Exclusive Features For Its Upcoming Pirate Action Game Skull and Bonesincluding several graphical and performance improvements.
Originally announced as Black Flag Infinite in 2013, Ubisoft Singapore’s Skull and Bones has gone through several iterations over its lengthy development cycle. The project became infamous for its many changes in setting and scope, high developer turnover, and repeatedly going over budget. With so many issues, some might have wondered if Ubisoft’s multiplayer pirate game would ever see the light of day.
However, the end finally seems to be in sight, with Skull and Bones slated for November 8th. And while the game is also coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and Amazon Luna, the game comes with several features exclusive to the PC version.
Ubisoft recently revealed the PC-exclusive features of Skull and Bones in a trailer. These include native support for 4K HDR and ultra-wide monitors. The game also comes with uncapped FPS and support for Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR graphics upscaling. The trailer also shows off the many graphics and performance options the upcoming Skull and Bones will have on PC.
While the trailer mainly focused on the features of the PC game, it also showcased some of what players will do in the Indian Ocean version of Skull and Bones. These include the epic naval battles players have come to expect and exploration of exotic locations such as ancient temples, active volcanoes, and other awe-inspiring vistas. Additionally, the trailer also showcases some of Skull and Bone’s in-game customization options, including various weapons and cosmetic upgrades for the player’s ship and captain.
Unfortunately for Ubisoft, the trailer didn’t receive a particularly positive reception. As of this writing, the trailer’s top comment on YouTube likens features like graphics options and DSS in a AAA PC game to a survival game with crafting mechanics. While these are certainly good things to have, they are also highly anticipated features and not something to brag regarding. Many other popular reviews expressed similar negative opinions of Skull and Bones, a game whose own developers allegedly criticized it for lacking depth. Of course, there were also several positive comments, but the overall reception might be described as mixed at best.
Understandably, some people aren’t excited regarding Ubisoft’s next pirate game. Last year, Kotaku published an in-depth analysis of Skull and Bones’ troubled development and Ubisoft Singapore’s dire situation. The report describes a project weighed down by low morale, poor direction and repeatedly changing goals, with developers comparing the project to Anthem from BioWare. Hopefully Skull and Bones will overcome the challenges, but not everyone is optimistic regarding this possibility.
Skull and Bones will be released on November 8 on Luna, PC, PS5, Stadia and Xbox Series X/S.
