El Salvador: Dialogue is essential for peace, Cardinal Chavez!

In El Salvador, the measures taken by the government once morest criminal organizations have resulted in the arrest of around 50,000 people. The current state of emergency is causing human rights violations.

Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chavez said that the situation in the Central American country of El Salvador is very delicate.

He said this in an interview granted to the Vatican news agency when he arrived at the Vatican to participate in the consistory where the Pope made 20 new cardinals on August 27 and the two-day meeting of cardinals on August 29-30.

In the absence of dialogue, Cardinal Chavez expressed his concern, referring to the state of emergency that has existed in the country since last March, saying that peace is not possible in El Salvador. He adds that the situation is dire, that walls are built, not bridges, and that dialogue and listening are needed.

As part of the tough measures taken by the then President Naibi Bukele as part of the fight once morest criminal organizations, around fifty thousand people from what are considered to be banned organizations have been arrested in the last 5 months. The state of emergency has been extended till September 18. It is said that the human rights of those arrested are being destroyed in this emergency.
