Amlan Borgohain; India’s fastest man on track

Amlan broke the national record at the Inter Railway Athletics Championship held in Rae Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi: Amlan Borhohain from Assam broke the national record in 100 meters. Amlan finished in 10.25 seconds at the Inter Railway Athletics Championship held in Rae Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

The previous record performance in 100m was held by Amiya Kumar Malik at 10.26 seconds. This is Amlan’s best time yet. Amlan also set a national record in the 200m earlier this year. The player finished 200 meters in 20.52 seconds.

Coach James Hillier said Amlan’s 10.34 to 10.25 was the result of his efforts over the past three months.

“He ran well in training two weeks ago. His physique was the best I had seen in those days. So last week I tested him in the 100m and he clocked a great time and I saw the potential to break the national record,” James clarified.

The coach also says that he wants to train Amlan for the National Games. He added that if he can perform better in 100m, it will reflect in 200m as well.

Amlan started his sports career as a footballer. But his mother advised Amlan to switch to another sport as he was always getting injured.

“My mother told me to either switch to another sport or quit it altogether. Playing football was not an option. It was a very difficult decision,” said Amlan.
