Pedro Castillo assumes presidency pro tempore of the Andean Community of Nations | He participates in presidential council with Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia | POLITICS

The president of the Republic, peter castleparticipated this Monday, August 29, in the XXII Andean Presidential Council, where Peru assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) for the period 2022-2023.

Presidents Luis Arce (Bolivia), Gustavo Petro (Colombia) and Guillermo Lasso (Ecuador) were present at the ceremony at CAN headquarters in San Isidro.

At the event, which was held in Lima, Castillo received the pro tempore presidency from his counterpart from Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, who came to our country to participate in said activity. Before that, Lasso presented a balance of the integration process in the region.

In his speech, Pedro Castillo thanked Ecuador for “the generosity” of moving the summit to Peru, despite the fact that it should be held in the neighboring country.

“That same spirit of collaboration, today, more necessary than ever, not only at the level of the Andean subregion but of the entire international community,” Castillo said in his presentation.

Later, Castillo took the post in the pro tempore presidency of said community. “For me and for Peru it is a great challenge […] It remains in the hands of us Peruvians to open these spaces to Bolivia, Colombia and the other countries to be a single family and we will work for what we have just heard in the commitments”, he claimed.

Within the framework of this meeting, President Castillo received his counterpart from Colombia, Gustavo Petro, at the Palace, who arrived in Lima at 9:30 am and was received by Vice President Dina Boluarte.

Previously, the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and the Secretary General of the CAN, Jorge Hernando Pedraza, held a meeting. Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackay, Foreign Minister of Peru, thanked Ecuador for the “gesture” of agreeing to hold the meeting in Lima.

The Andean Community is an integration mechanism, created in 1969, and is made up of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
