Noctua explains how to properly apply thermal paste on Ryzen 7000 processor

As you know, the cover of the new AMD desktop chips has a very unusual shape with cutouts. The presence of these cuts is easily explained. Since the Ryzen 7000 chips use the LGA format, that is, they are equipped with pads instead of a PGA pin matrix, the SMD components of the new processors, which were previously on the inside of the substrate, had to be moved to the front side of the PCB. There was little room for them. To solve the problem, AMD made cutouts in the heat-spreading cover to accommodate the above components between them.

Noctua believes that the usual method of applying thermal paste, for example, as with Ryzen 5000 processors, is not suitable in this case. The company recommends using a small amount of thermal paste and applying it in one dot with a diameter of 3-4 mm to the very center of the processor cover. The pressure between the cover and the cooling system following installation should evenly distribute the thermal paste over the entire surface of the chip cover.

Cutouts in the processor cover significantly reduce its overall area. When applying thermal paste in other ways, as indicated in the Noctua brochure for other chips, there is a chance that the thermal paste will leak out of the cover and get on the transistors or the circuit board of the chip.
