Hydrogen train: a world first for Alstom

Commissioned just four years following the start of testing of the world’s first hydrogen train, 14 Coradia iLint regional trains will transport passengers in Lower Saxony (Germany).

Alstom, the world leader in sustainable and smart mobility, announced on August 22 that the very first hydrogen train has reached a new historic milestone in Bremervörde, Lower Saxony (Germany). The Coradia iLint is now used to transport passengers on the world’s first 100% hydrogen rail line. Not very noisy, this train only emits water vapor and condensed water. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the 14 trains belonging to LNVG (Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen) will be operated by EVB on the route between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde and Buxtehude. Eventually, they will gradually replace 15 diesel trains.

Zero-emission trains
Recharged daily, day and night, at Linde’s hydrogen charging station, Alstom’s Coradia iLint has a range of 1,000 km for a full tank, with no polluting emissions! ” Zero-emission mobility is one of the most important goals to ensure a sustainable future and Alstom has a clear ambition to become the world leader in low-carbon propulsion systems for rail. The first hydrogen-powered train in the world, the Coradia iLint proves the height of our commitment to green mobility combined with the latest technological advances. We are very proud to be able to bring this technology to commercial exploitation, as part of a world first in collaboration with our leading partners. said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Chairman and CEO of Alstom.

The Coradia iLint was designed by Alstom teams from the center of excellence for regional trains located in Salzgitter (Germany), as well as those from the center of excellence for traction systems located in Tarbes (France). The project is supported by the German government and the development of the Coradia iLint was partly funded by Germany’s National Innovation Program (NIP) for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. © Alstom-Sabrina Adeline Nagel

A well-filled order book
In addition to this first contract, Alstom has also signed three other contracts for regional trains powered by hydrogen fuel cells. 27 Coradia iLint trains will reach the Frankfurt metropolitan area. With an option for 8 additional trains, 6 Coradia Stream hydrogen trains are currently being built in Llombardy (Italy). France is not to be outdone since 12 Coradia Polyvalent hydrogen trains will be shared between four regions. Finally, the Coradia iLint train has also passed trials in Austria, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden, among others.
