Press B – Middle East Watch a plan to grow plants on Mars and make it a green planet and now watch the details.
A study published in the journal PLOS ONE concluded that it may be possible to grow plants on Mars, and it will one day become a green planet, and lift the character of the Red Planet.
A team of researchers at Iowa State University has specifically suggested alfalfa as a potential candidate for cultivation on Mars. Alfalfa, or Medicago sativa, is a plant that has grown to feed livestock for hundreds of years.
The importance of soil and food
Plants need the same basic elements to survive on Mars as they do on Earth, and this includes soil, water, food, and sunlight. However, since Mars has no soil, researchers have turned to a more prominent element on the Red Planet: volcanic basalt.
The researchers found that by altering the basalt, they might use it to produce food for growing and preserving alfalfa, and following planting alfalfa in a patch of basalt land, there was a greater chance of survival for other crops grown in the same crop.
These crops included lettuce, radish and turnip, which grew 311 percent better.
the importance of water
The second part of the study focused on water, which is rarely found on Mars, and desalination. Most of the water on Mars is found in ice at the planet’s poles and is too salty to grow plants.
The researchers added a type of bacteria known as Synechococcus to make it less salty, and their research found that while the bacteria significantly reduced salt levels in the water, it was still not enough for the plant to consume.
The team found that they might further desalinate water by filtering it through basalt rocks. This freshly filtered water is now clean enough to grow plants.
The researchers said: “The effect of biologically filtered desalinated water on the growth of turnip and radish plants in rich basalt soil simulated by treated basalt soil was evaluated.”
“Both turnip and radish plants were grown healthily using bio-filtered, desalinated water compared to plants grown with unfiltered bio-water,” they added.
This also led to a significant increase in the dry weight of turnip plants (278%) and the fresh weight of radish bulbs (1047%) grown.
