After weeks and weeks of speculation, the decision related to the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit has fallen… The Belgian race remains on the world calendar!
A tweet from Formula 1 confirmed the trend. The Belgian GP will be present in 2023. “Formula 1 can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix will feature on the 2023 calendar, following an agreement to extend our partnership. Further details on the 2023 schedule will be announced in due course.“, also announced Formula 1, promoter of the championship, in a terse press release.
On Friday morning, F1 boss Stefano Domenicali had spilled the beans a bit. “I have read in many places that Spa-Francorchamps has been taken out of the calendar… I will remain cautious. That’s all I can say”, he confided. The pessimism that has prevailed for several weeks has shifted in recent days.
For the longer-term future of the Belgian Grand Prix, discussions continue between the protagonists, in particular around a possible rotation with other European races, such as Monaco for example.
In the list of the most frequently run Grand Prix in the world championship since 1950, the Belgian GP is in 4th place with a 67th edition this Sunday.
