This Saturday followingnoon, hornets attacked trail participants. Five had to be taken to hospital. The incident occurred near the Côte de la Redoute, a coast located in Remouchamps, in the town of Aywaille, and made famous by the Liège-Bastogne-Liège cycling race. The trail, also called La Redoutable, was organized from the neighboring town of Sprimont by a local club.
Thierry Carpentier, the mayor of Aywaille, took part in the race. He escaped the hornets: “Several riders were attacked by hornets, at different levels since several dozen were bitten. But, unfortunately, five people had to be boarded via the SMUR because they reacted strongly to the bites and it was necessary that they be hospitalized. The organizers reacted fairly quickly by modifying the course to avoid more incidents. At the finish, a doctor was present on site with the necessary equipment to calm the pain for the runners who finished the race despite the different stings they have suffered.”
