The delegations participating in the conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) failed to reach a single balanced solution that takes into account the positions of all states. This was stated by Igor Vishnevetsky, Deputy Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, speaking at the NPT Review Conference.

“It is important to ensure a balance in taking into account the positions of states. This, unfortunately, as we see, does not work. There are many delegations in this hall who have objections to the text (the final document of the NPT conference – approx. URA.RU),” Igor Vishnevetsky said, RIA Novosti reports.

The diplomat said that Russia is making the last attempt, offering to modify a number of items in accordance with the current agenda, ridding them of political connotations. “There are only five such points. Moreover, we are not talking regarding removing them, but regarding modifying them, ”he specified.

Vishnevetsky stressed that the Russian delegation is ready for constructive work in order to come to a “common denominator.” “And if there is no such desire, then one should simply state that there is no consensus and that the delegations cannot accept the draft that was presented,” he concluded.

Earlier, the representative of the Russian delegation at the NPT conference, Alexander Trofimov strongly denied accusations that the Russian Federation is threatening to use nuclear weapons. NPT Review Conference Chairman Gustavo Zlauvinen predicted a dangerous nuclear race for the United States and Russia.
