Tradition – Exhumation of Covid-19 victims authorized

From now on, the families of the victims of the coronavirus can file a request with the police headquarters of Antananarivo, to transfer their bodies to their family graves.

GISCARD Andriano, MP for Manakara, now rests among his family in his hometown, Manakara. His family recovered his body, temporarily buried in Bongatsara, during the coronavirus epidemic. He was exhumed and transported to the Fitovinany region at the beginning of this week, then buried in Manakara yesterday.

Giscard Andriano died in April 2021, following complications from Covid-19. The health protocol on the burial of victims of the disease indicates that the burial must take place immediately. Hence his burial outside his family tomb, at the time of his death. The transport of the bodies of people who died in the Analamanga region, to other regions, even those who succumbed to a disease other than the coronavirus, was also prohibited. The families had the choice between the cemetery of Anjanahary and the Fasan’ny Firaisampo in Anosiala. Others were buried in other cemeteries in the Analamanga region.

A year following the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic, the most deadly for Madagascar since the circulation of this virus in the country, the State authorizes the recovery of the bodies of the victims and their transfer to their towns of origin.

Presence required

Those who have a loved one buried in Antananarivo and who wish to transfer their body to their family vault, can submit their request to the Antananarivo police headquarters. “We have received around twenty requests so far”, indicates the prefect of police of Antananarivo, General Angelo Ravelonarivo.

A source at the Ministry of Public Health points out that the presence of a medical inspector and a representative of the State, such as the district chief, at the place where the exhumation of the body will take place, is required. . “It is the doctor who will decide if the transfer of the body can be carried out or not”, specifies the source.

The approximately forty bodies buried at Fasan’ny Firaisam-po, which has a capacity of five hundred graves, have not been recovered by their relatives so far, according to the mayor of Anosiala, Olivier Randriamihaja.
