“It’s my vocation”: to cope with the lack of teachers, Christian, a pensioner, finds his class in Namur

The start of the school year is fast approaching but some schools are still short of teachers. In Namur, we even called on a retired teacher.

With the start of the new school year approaching, Samuel Lessin prepared his class. The latter will accommodate 24 second-year primary students. “Children can come with an empty pencil box. And we have to prepare the equipment so that the children can work in good conditions”he explains.

His back-to-school speech focuses on motivation. This year, the start of the new school year will be marked by a few new features: the introduction of manual techniques, a little cooking and above all language awareness. “Teach children not a language, but in any case discover that there are other languages and other ways of living in the worldtestifies the teacher.

Christian Basia has been retired since last year. But with 45 years of career, he decided to re-enlist to compensate for the lack of teachers in secondary school. “It’s a bit like my vocation, I’ve always liked to teach. I come here a bit like home”, he confides.

After a year of resuming face-to-face classes, the teachers want to turn the page and hope that the 730 students of the establishment quickly find their rhythm. “We would like to come back to a much more stabilized system for the students. So our requirements have increased a little bit because we would like the students to catch up with a correct level”explains Bruno Nicolas, professor of religion.
