For fear of many infections from the West Nile virus transmitted by mosquitoes, more and more communities in Friuli are now spraying insecticides. According to the Friulian media, there are currently 14 infected people in the region. Some of them are in hospitals, but fortunately nobody is in intensive care at the moment. The situation is different in the Veneto region, where there are currently 29 infected people and people have already died following an infection.
Local politicians, like those in Sacile, are now insisting on spraying insecticide in their community, following spraying in nearby Aviano. Insecticides are also used in Turriaco near Grado, around Udine and near Tolmezzo.
Strict rules for residents
Citizens are made aware of the use of the sprayer with information sheets, the use is announced with the time and date, and the following prohibitions apply during this time:
- Pets are not allowed outside
- You have to keep the windows and doors closed
- Do not leave laundry hanging out to dry
- Fruits and vegetables from gardens near the treated community roads must not be consumed for 72 hours. If they are harvested following this time, they must be washed extensively before consumption.
In Pasiano, Mayor Edi Piccinin also issued an ordinance obliging all citizens by October 31 not to leave objects lying around that might collect rainwater. “Those objects with which water is collected must be emptied daily,” according to the regulation.
Horses are vaccinated
Horse fans who take their horses to the sea for popular horseback riding from the end of the high season have the opportunity to have their animals vaccinated. There is no approved vaccine for humans.
