A 36-year-old Italian was simultaneously infected with le Covid-19, monkeypox and HIV. The information was published on August 19, 2022 in the specialist journal Journal of Infection. The 30-year-old traveled to Spain between June 16 and 20, 2022. Nine days following his return, he began to suffer from a high fever, headache and throat pain.
Medical tests then revealed that he had Covid-19 and its variant Omicron BA.5.1. A few days later, on July 2, new symptoms appeared with painful blisters on his body. The man finally went to the emergency room on July 5. The samples then confirmed that the 30-year-old had contracted monkey pox but they also revealed an infection in the HIV. The patient had however tested negative for this disease in September 2021, indicates The Parisian who relays the information.
A single case so far
The man was eventually treated with Sotrovimab, a monoclonal antibody. By July 9, the majority of his symptoms had disappeared and he was able to return home, with an obligation of isolation.
“Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of co-infection with SARS-CoV-2 and monkeypox virus, especially in subjects with recent travel to areas with monkeypox outbreaks” , explained the Italian scientists, without concluding that this situation can aggravate the symptoms. It would be “the only reported case of co-infection with the monkeypox virus, SARS-CoV-2 and HIV”, according to them.
