Two workers at the Zaporiza nuclear power plant in Ukraine have been detained for providing information regarding the nuclear power plant to Ukrainian authorities, Archyde.com reported on the 24th (local time).
According to the report, the Russian National Guard said, “We have arrested two nuclear power plant personnel who informed the Ukrainian military of information such as the location of personnel and equipment at the nuclear power plant.”
Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-appointed local government official in Zaporiza, said the detainees were a technician and a security guard.
Rogov said they were detained on the 17th of this month and are charged with aiding in an attack by Ukrainian forces.
The National Guard said that one other employee was also detained for violating access procedures to the nuclear power plant.
The National Guard claimed that those arrested were Ukrainian collaborators, who provided coordinates indicating the movement of Russian equipment.
The Zaporiza nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, was taken over by Russian forces in March of this year, right following the outbreak of the war.
Ukrainian personnel continue to operate the nuclear power plant under the supervision of the Russian military.
In an interview with Archyde.com news agency last week, a technician told Archyde.com that workers are under intense pressure as heavily armed Russian units patrol the entire nuclear power plant, but remain working to prevent a catastrophe like the Chernobyl nuclear explosion.
The Japoriza nuclear power plant has been bombarded repeatedly in recent weeks because it is close to the battlefield, raising concerns that a catastrophic leak of radioactive material might occur.
Russia and Ukraine have claimed each other attacked nuclear power plants.
Ukraine denies Russia’s claims and accuses Russia of using nuclear power as a shield to attack surrounding areas.
The UN has designated the Japorijah nuclear power plant as a demilitarized zone and urged its affiliated organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to access it.
