On Tuesday, at the future crossroads of the U2 and U5 in the new building, alongside the noise from the construction site, classical music was also heard. Despite the cloudy sky, numerous interested people turned up for the open-air concert.

Online since today, 5.30 p.m
The concert started at 4.40 p.m. at the U2/U5 construction site at the intersection of Lindengasse and Kirchengasse with a short delay. In the first half hour, the Viennese orchestra Valsassina Ensemble, conducted by Bernhard Melbye Voss, played atonal music – i.e. music in which the melody is not focused on a fundamental note.
At first there were still many passers-by, but over time a small crowd gathered around the music orchestra. Just in time for the first notes of the Viennese waltz by Johann and Josef Strauss, the noise of the construction site fell silent and some viewers pulled out their smartphones to record a video.
Construction work will be underground
After the classical music, the construction workers had a drink on site. Several district politicians were also present. The concert was initiated by the district of Neubau and supported by the association of merchants in the Siebensternviertel. At the moment, the construction work at the intersection of Lindengasse and Kirchengasse is still taking place above ground. From 2023, according to Wiener Linien, they will generally only be underground.
First classical orchestra at the Danube Island Festival
The Vienna Orchestra under the performance of the Danish conductor Melbye Voss consists of 21 young musicians from different countries. The orchestra was founded by Leon de Castillo around ten years ago and in spring 2013 the orchestra played its debut concert at the Diplomatic Academy on the Wieden.
This was followed by concerts in the Vienna Konzerthaus, but the orchestra also performed overseas at the Mexican State Opera Opera de Bellas Artes or in the New York concert hall Carnegie Hall. As the first classical music block in the history of the Danube Island Festival, the Valsassina Ensemble 2021 played on the large festival stage at the open-air music festival.
