100% national origin: the first jack mackerel vending machine is inaugurated in Coronel | National

Camanchaca installed the first “jack mackerel” in regions located in the Coronel intermodal station, following the successful pilot that was carried out in Central Station, in the Metropolitan region, during the month of June.

With the aim of promoting the consumption of seafood, as an economic alternative with high nutritional value, Camanchaca inaugurated this Tuesday an innovative horse mackerel vending machinespecifically at the Coronel Biotren station, in the Bío Bío region.

In tune with the current economic context and the rise in food prices, horse mackerel appears as a viable nutritional option due to its easy access and low cost for families.

For these reasons, the fishing company invested in this new way of bringing this product closer to people.

Inauguration of horse mackerel vending machine in Coronel

Alejandro Florás Guerraty, regional manager of Camanchaca Pesca Sur, explained that “the recovery of the biomass of horse mackerel and its favorable scenario allows new projects to be drawn up for the benefit of people.”

He also said that in “Camanchaca we have been working for several years and devising new ways to bring seafood closer and closer to the tables of Chileans, convinced that we produce high quality products and that they are a nutritional contribution for all and all”.

The choice of the pioneer commune to receive the first “jurelmatic” in regions is not accidental. Coronel It is a fishing area par excellence and where 90% of canned horse mackerel is produced for national and international marketing.

In this regard, Jorge Bernales Pensa, Camanchaca’s commercial manager, commented that “through Unico, we want Chileans to value horse mackerel as the great protein that it is and begin to incorporate it into their daily diet.”

“That is why we also hope to be able to expand the presence of these vending machines to other districts of Bío Bío and to other regions, and then expand the brand’s offer, adding other foods such as mussels, shrimp, salmon, among others,” explained Bernales. .

Grams and prices of canned horse mackerel

The horse mackerel dispensing machine will have 100% national preserves available to consumers in presentations of 425 and 200 grams, in its three versions, natural, without added salt and with tomato, at a price of $1000 and $500, respectively.

In addition, it will be located in the Coronel intermodal station available to all passengers who frequent this place.

The passenger manager of EFE Sur, Gonzalo Cueto Pezoa, valued the installation of the machine and stressed that “at EFE SUR we always explore different alternatives, which allow us to add value to the service we provide daily to more than 40,000 people in 7 districts of the Great Conception (…)”.

The new vending machine is part of the projects carried out by Camanchaca this year in Coronel, a commune where the new frozen jack mackerel plant was inaugurated in May. This meant an investment of US$30 million to optimize production processes, which translates into a daily production of 650 tons of finished product.

Jack mackerel market and canned food in Chile

Currently in Chile more than 80% of industrial fishing catches are destined for direct human consumption. Within them, horse mackerel has a majority share thanks to its recovery and projection, which allowed it to obtain the international Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification in 2018, which guarantees the sustainability of the resource.

According to data from the Association of Fisheries Industrialists (Asipes) in 2021, the industrial fishermen of Bío Bío captured more than 430 thousand tons of horse mackerel, of which 85% was destined for direct human consumption, which translated into the production of 94 million canned and more than 230 thousand tons of frozen of this resource.

In the case of canned horse mackerel, 60% of production is destined for the national market.

The favorable scenario that derives from the good management of available resources for the Chilean fishing industry, has led to an increase in the consumption of these products among Chileans and, in addition, has resulted in a prosperous outlook for drawing up new projects.
