Between August 16 and August 22, there were an average of 78.1 hospital admissions per day due to covid, down 18% from the previous reporting period, according to figures from the Sciensano Public Health Institute updated Tuesday morning. A total of 1,105 coronavirus-positive people are currently hospitalized, including 71 patients treated in intensive care. Between August 13 and 19, 1,704 new Sars-CoV-2 contaminations were detected on average per day, down 21% compared to the previous week.
Over the same period, 8.9 people died per day on average while they were carrying the virus (-7%), bringing the death toll to 32,463 since the start of the pandemic in Belgium.
Nearly 7,700 tests on average were also carried out daily, for a positivity rate of 24.6%.
The reproduction rate of the virus is 0.89. When it is less than 1, this indicator means that the epidemic tends to slow down. The incidence, which provides the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 233 over 14 days.
