Manchester United won an all-time unexpected 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool in the Premier League at Old Trafford, following protests once morest the club’s American owners, and following their worst start to a season in more than a century.
United scored its first points of the season thanks to goals by Gidon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, while Liverpool, led by coach Jurgen Klopp, remained without victory in its first three matches and with only two points.
Sancho put United ahead in the 16th minute, when he received a pass from Anthony Ilanga, dribbled past James Milner and left him on the ground, before hitting the bottom corner of the visitors’ goal.
Christian Eriksen missed the opportunity to score the second goal for coach Eric Ten Hag’s team through a free kick, as Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson cleared the ball from the top corner, but United consolidated their lead following the break.
A mistake by Jordan Henderson gave substitute Anthony Martial the opportunity to pass the ball to Rashford, who went ahead and fired past Alisson in the 53rd minute to score his first league goal since January.
Liverpool reduced the difference in the 81st minute when United goalkeeper David de Gea saved Fabio Carvalho’s shot, but Mohamed Salah quickly followed the ball into the goal.
The final minutes witnessed some tension in the ranks of the hosts, but they held out for the United fans, who started the match by chanting once morest the club’s owners, the Glazer family, to return to their homes in a festive atmosphere.
