Nagoshi, developer at heart, not CEO!

After more than thirty years of good and loyal service within Nintendo’s rival company, Toshihiro Nagoshi felt it was time for him to start a new journey. Over his years at SEGA, Nagoshi had risen enough to run for a position within the company’s management. However, as he explains today to the editorial staff of 4Playersthat was not what interested him. Sensing that SEGA was preparing the ground for its induction, the developer preferred to pack up and focus on what it loves most: developing games.

(…) In the past few years, I had reached the highest management level of Sega (…) I said to the current owner: “Guys, I don’t want to be the CEO of Sega”. I’m a gamer and game maker, I want to steer my career in that direction as well. (…) I ended up realizing that the prospects were better if I started my own company and didn’t stay at Sega. And at the same time, Sega can now train someone to be the future CEO.

As he says himself, this decision was favorable to both parties and in no way damaged his relationship with the Japanese publisher. Now fully focused on what he wants to develop, Toshihiro Nagoshi is working in the shadows on his next hit, a title regarding which we still don’t know a lot. Nevertheless, the latter revealed, during his interview with 4Playersthe influences on which he was counting on for the atmosphere of the very first game of his studio, and there is a director who gives him a lot of ideas!

First clues before the real revelations

Genuinely passionate, it’s hard for Nagoshi not to divulge more regarding his next hit which should nevertheless retain what makes the salt of the Yakuza license: namely, drama, violence and humor. Moreover, for PlayStation players who wish to discover the universe of the license, it is possible to recover “for free”, and before September 6, Yakuza : Like A Dragon thanks, at least, to the PlayStation Plus Essential subscription.

Again, I have to be vague. But that’s how it is: if I have an idea and want to realize it – then it quickly springs from me. (…) I’m not the type to be able to hold back such a thing for long. So you probably won’t have to wait too long… Or rather: I think I’ll release it much sooner than other developers would. Of course, I can’t say too much regarding our game yet, but I can give a rough idea: it will definitely contain violence as a game element, but I don’t want to go too much in the direction of thriller or even horror.

Talkative without saying too much, Nagoshi tells us that we might get information on his next game sooner than we think. He outbids these remarks by adding that he would like to be inspired by the films of Quentin Tarantino for this new title.. There will be violence, of course, but counterbalanced by aspects typical of the director’s films: humor, madness, seriousness but also, and above all, a touch of humanity. This is precisely what he is trying to infuse into his project at the moment: we can’t wait to discover the result!
