Friday, “FAA” lost in two identical sets of 6-4 in front of the eventual winner of the tournament, the Croatian Borna Coric.
The latter has also made a prodigious jump of 123 places in the ATP rankings, published on Monday, now occupying 29th place.
Coric, back from shoulder surgery last year and whose last final on the circuit was in 2020 in St. Petersburg, upset Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets 7-6 (0) on Sunday. and 6-2 in the Cincinnati tournament final.
Auger-Aliassime reached the quarter-finals there for the second tournament in a row. He had also reached this stage at the National Bank Open in Montreal, but had lost his flag to the Norwegian Casper Ruud.
It is all the same an encouraging preparation for the Quebecer, who will now turn his attention to the last major tournament of the season, the United States Open, which will be held from August 29 to September 11. He will have a lot of points to defend, he who reached the semi-final in 2021.
The world ranking is still dominated by Russian Daniil Medvedev, who is ahead of Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal. Carlos Alcaraz and Tsitsipas follow in order.
