This clot occurs when blood flow to the intestines or digestive system is reduced due to a blockage in the blood vessels, and the causes of exposure vary.

Atherosclerosis, i.e. the accumulation of fat and deposits in the walls of the blood vessels, causing them to narrow or block.

This condition is more common in the 60s, but it can occur at any age, and some risk factors increase the chances of developing it, such as:

Smoking.

Diabetes.

-Hypertension.

High levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides in the body.

Types of intestinal clots and their symptoms

Bowel clots are divided into two types: chronic intestinal thrombosis and simple intestinal thrombosis, depending on the cause behind each of them, and the symptoms vary as follows:

Simple intestinal thrombosis symptoms

Sharp pain in the abdomen, stabbing in one area of the abdomen.

Nausea and vomiting.

Bloody stool.

Having a history of chronic heart and blood vessel problems.

Symptoms of chronic gastroenteritis

Abdominal pain following meals.

-Weight loss.

Fear of eating or changing eating habits because of the pain.

Vomiting and nausea.

Constipation or diarrhea.

Having a history of heart attack, stroke, coronary artery disease, etc.

Intestinal clot treatment

For a simple bowel thrombosis, emergency surgery may be needed to remove the clot, reopen blocked arteries, and restore blood flow to the intestine. In some cases, a surgeon may need to remove part of the intestine if tissue in it has died.

The patient may need medication to get rid of the clot in the artery, according to each case.

As for the treatment of chronic intestinal thrombosis, it requires either taking liquidity drugs such as warfarin, performing a catheter to open the artery, or performing surgery to remove the deposits in the artery and get rid of the blockage, and this is determined by the specialist doctor.

What happens if the bowel clot is not treated?

In the event of neglecting the treatment of a bowel clot, some complications may occur, including: gangrene occurs as a result of the death of tissues in the intestine and a sudden and complete blockage of blood flow to it.

It is also possible for the patient to have a hole in the intestinal wall, so its contents can leak out and cause a serious infection.

Sometimes the patient may suffer from scarring in the tissues that have been narrowed or blocked in the intestine.
