Fire in New York: an UBER driver stops his race to help residents

An UBER driver has been called a ‘hero’ by the boss of the ride-hailing company following he stopped on a run to help residents whose building was on fire in New York, reports CNN.

It was while driving his passenger through Brooklyn to get to the airport on Wednesday morning that Fritz Sam came across a four-story building that was engulfed in fire.

Seeing flames coming out of the window of one of the apartments and no emergency services on the scene, the driver therefore decided to park and come to the aid of the people in the building.

The passenger, Jemimah Wei, then quickly followed him to start warning residents that a blaze was in progress, as some of them started to come out.

Learning that there might be people in the building, the driver did not hesitate to enter the building. With the fire contained to the second floor accommodation, Fritz was then able to navigate the building and was able to help the remaining residents out.

Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly following the last resident was evacuated. After ensuring that everyone was safe, the driver then resumed his race to realize the end of the journey.

“I spoke to this Uber hero – he was grateful someone helped him move his car – when he was the one who rushed into the building,” the official tweeted Thursday. Uber Chairman and CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

No one was injured in the fire and an investigation is ongoing, authorities told the media.
