A suspected case of Ebola detected in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced 14 Ebola outbreaks since 1976, the latest being recently recorded in the North West, where five deaths were recorded.

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are currently investigating a suspected case of Ebola in the east of the country, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Saturday.

The case in question is a 46-year-old woman who died Monday in Beni, one of the main centers of the Ebola epidemic, a hemorrhagic fever, which killed some 2,300 people between 2018 and 2020 in the country. It raises fears of a resurgence of this terrible epidemic.

Initially supported for other pathologies, the deceased woman presented symptoms similar to those of Ebola, the WHO said in a press release.
