A Tunisian national accused of transporting migrants illegally from North Africa to Italy has been arrested by border police in Ventimiglia, northwestern Italy. The suspect was wanted for a landing of migrants at the end of July on the Sicilian island of Pantelleria.
Aged 32, he was apprehended by the border police of this town in Liguria on August 17, aboard a train from France, from where he had been expelled.
Police at the Ponte San Luigi crossing point between France and Italy found no documents on him, but further investigations enabled security officials to successfully identify him.
According to police, the man reached Pantelleria on July 23 on a boat carrying six foreign nationals from Tunisia. One of the migrants who landed on the Sicilian island showed police officials a video he had filmed with his mobile phone in which the 32-year-old man might be seen behind the helm of the boat.
After his arrest, the man was taken to San Remo prison.
