Comment: Another bitter farewell – but no Makéléle 2.0

Once once more, Real Madrid don’t put obstacles in the way of a deserving player. Real Madrid now “only” have to make sure that neither the case of Claude Makéléle nor Xabi Alonso is repeated. A (grateful) comment on the farewell to Casemiro.

Another one of those bitter exits. Say goodbye to a legend once more. The time of Carlos Henrique Casimiro mightn’t have been more successful. Just imagine: The Brazilian clearer has the first four years as part of the first team always won the Champions League! In 2014, of course, only as a backup (thanks for the work in Dortmund, Casi), but following the loan season in Porto then in 2016, 2017 and 2018 as a decisive element. Just like in 2022. It’s not just regarding being a great player and a crowd favourite, it’s also regarding Zinedine Zidane’s key to success.

“Zizou” acted from his own experience: When Florentino Pérez sold Claude Makéléle in 2003, Real Madrid not only played without a clearer, but from then on with six offensive players on the pitch: Figo, Raúl, Guti, Zidane, Ronaldo and new signing Beckham. Far too much, no balance – dark years followed, thanks to which the Frenchman decided shortly following taking office in early 2016 to sacrifice an offensive like James to bring balance with Casemiro. The man, who grew up in modest circumstances near São Paulo and gets emotional just by looking at a yoghurt from back then, was to win a total of 18 titles in the white jersey. The last just a few days ago – in his last start-up for Real Madrid. UEFA Super Cup Man of the Match.

The madridismo has the self-proclaimed “Tower in Battle” much to thank. “He wants to take on a new challenge. The club and I understand that“, Carlo Ancelotti already explained the situation and knows: “When I heard his wish – there is no turning back. Taking that into account and everything going well for him in the negotiations, we have to wish him the best.

He won everything in Madrid, showed it to his critics once more and once more, and yet you can’t blame him for looking for a new challenge following all. Just like many others before him, from Raphaël Varane to number predecessor Xabi Alonso to Cristiano Ronaldo. One can argue regarding Manchester United’s attractiveness, but not regarding the power of money and that Real Madrid can no longer necessarily keep up with United or even Paris. Or regarding the attractive charisma that United, Barcelona and Co. still have despite everything.

You don’t have to understand that Casemiro wants to join this chaos club in the Europa League, but you should respect it. It’s always regarding (more) money, but also regarding proving it to everyone else once more. It worked for David Alaba, but not for Varane – maybe now with his ex-colleague. In my opinion, the risk of a new Makéléle case is still low – even following Casemiro’s departure, the Blancos will not only appear with offensive stars, but also with some workers. As unique as he probably was – unique to specifically complete the trio “MCK” – I almost fear that he nowhere can shine as brightly as in Madrid. With Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos next to you, things might be easier, but “MCK”, Zidane’s masterpiece, was just optimal, a unique symbiosis or as Ancelotti said: the Bermuda Triangle, “because the ball disappears there.” And: One of the most successful trios in football history thanks to 16 titles won, including four joint premier class trophies (one more than the famous Barcelona trio). This era is now over – few would have guessed that it was not the older Modrić (36) or Kroos (32) but the younger Casemiro (30) who ended it.

Of course he has the right to do so, Real Madrid still takes a lot – in addition to that, in many respects, fair, respectable handling without a mud fight or possible night kicks. And a fair price (at 80 my pain threshold would be). A little late at most, but United’s interest was only just beginning and if a player who identified with Real and its history like no other and never really expressed intentions to change (unlike Varane, for example), then asks for a change, it’s only valid to say thank you and not to put obstacles in the way. And keep looking ahead.

Because not only a Makéléle 2.0 has to be avoided, but also a reflection of 2014: Even then, following the CL success, the number 14 went for a short time and following Alonso’s departure, the second season under Ancelotti was almost unsuccessful. Casemiro not only leaves behind a lot of money, but also a more than intact, well-mixed team, his successor is here (although not yet 100 percent acclimatized), his mission seems to be over. Thanks for everything, Casi, and when it comes to a player whose teammates are happy that he plays and trains on his own team, all I can say is: It’s good that we can’t (yet) meet you in 2022/23!
