“Avatar” removed from the Disney + catalog

The news did not go unnoticed. Disney+ just pulled Avatar of its catalog worldwide.

A decision a priori surprising, since it is the reigning world box office champion of all time (2.84 billion dollars in revenue), ahead of Avengers : Endgame (2.79 billion). But a choice that responds to a well-established commercial strategy. The film shot by James Cameron in 2009 will indeed be released in theaters on September 23 in a remastered version, just to increase its financial lead over Marvel superheroes, to refresh the memory of moviegoers and to repeat the event at a few weeks before the release of its sequel, Avatar : The Way of Water, December 14. Even allowing “Avatar marathons” for the end of year celebrations.

It remains to be seen whether spectators, less tempted by trips to the cinema than before the Covid, will want to relive on the big screen a blockbuster seen and reviewed on the little one for 13 years.
