Storms in Corsica: the toll rises to six dead and around twenty injured

The toll of the violent storms that hit Corsica on Thursday morning rose to six dead, twenty injured, including four in “very serious” condition.

Late in the morning, the Haute-Corse prefecture announced the death of a 46-year-old man in Calvi (Haute-Corse), victim of a tree falling on his bungalow. In Corse-du-Sud, a 13-year-old girl, hit by a falling tree, and a 72-year-old woman, by the fall of the roof of a straw hut, also lost their lives. Later in the day, the deaths of a fisherman in Girolata (Corse-du-Sud) and a kayaker in Erbalunga (Haute-Corse), were announced.

Corsica was placed Thursday morning and until 11:00 am in orange vigilance by Météo-France, which had announced to “strong thunderstorms in progress on the west coast with very strong gusts“.
