Sofia Polcanova and her doubles partner Bernadette Szocs won gold at the European Table Tennis Championships in Munich.

Defeat in the final: European Championship silver for Habesohn/Gardos in Munich

The first set in the women’s final in the Rudi Sedlmayr Hall developed into a real thriller with strong rallies: Polcanova/Szocs had to fend off four set balls and were only able to use their fourth to make it 18:16. The second round was only tight at the beginning and went 11:6 to the slightly favored duo with Austrian participation. In the third set, the two ran behind for a long time, but showed nerves of steel and used their first match ball to make it 11:9 and thus win the gold medal at the European Championships. Polcanova/Szocs thus won the title without losing a set.

Polcanova is now hoping for a singles final once morest Szocs

“It’s indescribable, I’m so emotional right now. I’ve often been in the final, was often third, but I’ve never won gold, so it’s all the nicer today,” said Polcanova happily. Szocs regretted that celebrating is not possible at the moment as they are both still playing singles, but: “Now I hope that we will also face each other in the singles final.”
