Minister of Mines and Energy now affirms that energy sovereignty is important for the Government

After a meeting this Wednesday between the Minister of Mines and Energy, Irene Vélez, with the president of Naturgas, Luz Stella Murgas, the head of the energy mining portfolio pointed out the importance that energy sovereignty has for the government of Gustavo Petro.

“First of all, we are committed to not creating dependencies but, on the contrary, seeing how we make responsible use of our resources, including gas,” said the Minister of Mines and Energy.

He pointed out that the contracts already awarded will be reviewed because they recognize that there are some bottlenecks that must be examined to see how they are going to unblock them.

He confirmed that the Government’s goal is to accelerate an energy transition in a fair, safe and technically responsible manner.

Last week, Minister Irene Vélez had indicated that the country must move quickly towards cleaner energies and that the Government of Gustavo Petro will honor its campaign promise not to grant more oil and gas exploration contracts.

In an interview with Blu Radio, he even said that, if gas reserves ran out, Colombia might import that fuel from Venezuela or anywhere else.

At the end of Wednesday’s meeting, the president of Naturgas, Luz Stella Murgas, pointed out that all energy sources are welcome for the natural gas industry, as long as they provide support and reliability to the more than 36 million Colombians who benefit from natural gas. “Without sacrificing the energy sovereignty that Colombia enjoys today,” said the union leader.
