Sketched out last spring, the agreement between Volkswagen and Mahindra is now materializing with the announcement of 5 electric SUVs for the Indian market. Their platform will make extensive use of components from the MEB platform and the first model is expected for 2024.

Like all major market players Indian, Mahindra is in turn positioning itself on the electric vehicle. Forgot the past years and the redemption of Reva and her small electric city car. The change of energy is seen here as an opportunity to assert oneself on the higher segments. Of course, always with SUVs that are part of the brand’s DNA. A brand new platform called Inglo has therefore been designed. For the key components of the electrical part, the Indian manufacturer, however, preferred to turn to a partner. Electric motors, battery modules, control devices will thus come from Volkswagen’s MEB platform. 5 models are planned, with a total of more than 1 million units over their life cycle. This partnership, which was basically just a simple client/supplier agreement, is now announced by the two partners as a strategic agreement for the electrification of the Indian market. It might lead to other opportunities, in both ways.

5 electric SUVs under two names

In detail, Mahindra plans to launch 5 electric SUVs. They will be launched in two different ranges. The first two will extend the XUV family into the electric world with the XUV.e8 and XUV.e9. Two large SUVs, one more family-friendly, the other more streamlined, of 4.74 m and 4.79 m launched at the end of 2024 and in the spring of 2025.

Three models will follow under the new “BE” range: BE.05, BE.07 and BE.09. Three models that will fit more into the C segment with lengths between 4.35 m and 4.65 m. The 05 will inaugurate the range in autumn 2025, followed the following year by the 07. The 09 should not arrive until 2027.

Let us recall that the Indian government hopes to bring to 30% the share of electric on its market in 2030.
