An American accused of child sexual assault has died in a Denton County court in Texas following a jury found him guilty. According to local media, the death of Edward LeClair, 57, would be related to a cloudy liquid that he drank while the verdict was read.
The prosecutor in the case, Jamie Beck, assures that together with LeClair and his lawyer there was a transparent plastic bottle, from which the defendant began to drink desperately while listening to the judge.
At least two people in the courtroom noted that it was a cloudy or yellow drink, but LeClair’s behavior did not arouse suspicion and was related to her possible nervousness regarding the decision in the case.
Once the verdict was known, LeClair was temporarily taken to a cell in that same court, where shortly followingwards officers found him very pale and unconscious. According to witnesses, he had been vomiting for several minutes.
The authorities called the emergency services and the defendant was transferred to a nearby hospital, where they confirmed his death. The investigators took the bottle as evidence and hope that through the autopsy the causes of his death can be determined.
LeClair was facing five counts of child sexual assault for a crime that occurred in 2016. He was arrested two years later and remained in prison until July 2018, when he was released on $30,000 bail.
