Taipei City: An international event for the LGBTQ community in Taiwan has been cancelled.

Organizers of the event had called for Taiwan’s name to be removed from the 2025 event. The event in Taiwan was canceled following this.

The name of the event was World Pride 2025 (WorldPride 2025). But Taiwan has accused the organizers of insisting that the name ‘Taiwan’ be removed from the title and later canceling the event, citing ‘political reasons’.

“After careful evaluation, we learned that if the event were to take place in Taiwan, it would harm the interests of Taiwan and the gay community in Taiwan.

Therefore, we have decided to shelve the project even before signing the contract,” said the organizers of the event.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded that if this event had been held in Taiwan, it would have been the first World Pride 2025 to be held in East Asia.

Taiwan competes under the name ‘Chinese Taipei’ in international events including the Olympics.
