On the night of Friday, around 11:20 p.m., a fire broke out in furnishings in an apartment on the second floor on Gervinusstrasse in Berlin-Charlottenburg. An 80-year-old woman died.
The firefighters immediately fought the fire in the apartment and raised an extensive alarm.
According to the police, residents of the six-storey apartment building noticed the smoke and forcibly opened the door of the burning apartment. However, they were unable to enter the apartment due to the heavy smoke. The fire brigade might only save the woman lifeless.
16 residents had brought themselves to safety before the fire brigade arrived. Apparently, everyone was warned in good time by triggered smoke detectors.
The fire brigade was on site with 54 emergency services and extinguished the fire following around two hours. The exact cause of the fire is currently being determined by a specialist commissioner of the Berlin police.
