Three days have passed since a huge wildfire broke out near Bordeaux, known as the wine-growing region of southwestern France. One firefighter described the wildfires as “monster-like.” Temperatures in the Gironde department reached 40 degrees Celsius on Friday and are expected to continue to be extremely hot until Sunday, with firefighters warning that the weather conditions and extreme dryness might intensify wildfires.

Greece and Sweden have sent firefighting aircraft, while Germany, Austria, Romania and Poland have sent firefighters to deal with the wildfires in France, according to the French president’s office.

In addition, wildfires in central Portugal entered their sixth day, with 10,500 hectares burned. Hundreds of people have been evacuated in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura, as new wildfires erupt in Spain.

In the UK, the Meteorological Office has issued a four-day ‘extreme heat’ warning for parts of England and Wales.
