Firefighters from the Hainaut-Est rescue zone are in the process of intervention on the slag heap of Bois du Cazier in Marcinelle, early Wednesday evening, following a fire which broke out in the middle of the noon, said the rescue zone confirming information from several media. No details were given on the origin or extent of the disaster. What seems certain, however, is that there are no victims.
Access to the site is difficult for firefighters. “The cars don’t know how to get to the place because there are no roads. The work on site is complicated”said the relief area.
While the fire appeared to be extinguished, the fire men were called to the scene by the pilots of the federal police helicopters present to help the firefighters.
Civil protection, with a larger capacity water tank, is now expected on site. The work looks complicated. “The pilots told me that they were still staying a little over two hours on site before returning because it would start to be difficult with the early evening and the light which would start to drop”said Michel Mean, the spokesperson for the firefighters.
