[D:인디그라운드(111)] Ha-jeong Yoo “I was only an idol trainee for 5 years, I really wanted to do my own music”

New song ‘No Wave’ released on the 9th

Singer-songwriter Yoo Ha-jeong first announced her voice through the OST ‘Silly Love’ (2017) of the drama ‘Suspicious Partner’ following 5 years of being an idol trainee. It was her first official album under her own name, but he was thirsty for some reason. In the meantime, while she was participating in an idol audition program, she suddenly felt that her clothes were ‘not mine’ and set out to find her true own music.

It was in 2020 that Ha-jeong Yoo, who had a three-year hiatus, really started making time for her own music. He started telling his story to the public with his digital single ‘We’, and from there he went on to find his color, releasing three albums. And through his new song ‘No Wave’, which was released on the 9th, he wants to become a ‘break time’ for someone.

-Have you dreamed of becoming a singer since childhood?

Yes, I liked to sing since I was little, and I spent a lot of time alone at home, so I watched a lot of TV. I think I naturally dreamed of becoming a singer while watching music programs. Growing up, I felt that my emotions were resolved and comforted through music, so from then on, naturally, I memorized the spell, ‘I’m going to become a singer’.

– Your debut is ‘Suspicious Partner’ OST (2017).

At that time, I was an idol trainee. While I was a trainee, I participated in the OST at the recommendation of the representative of the company I belonged to. Thank you so much. Actually, I have to say that I made my debut suddenly, because I was a trainee with no promises, and I didn’t know when I was going to debut. I remember feeling overwhelmed and trembling at the thought of my voice being heard for the first time in the world.

– How did you feel when you debuted as the singer of your dreams?

To be honest, I don’t think I thought of it as a debut at the time. After recording, she returned to the practice room and practiced the evaluation at the end of the month. Still, it felt really good. Is my song on the music site? The tension was at its peak for a few days. You must have heard it hundreds of times.

-Have you ever had a chance to stand alone as a singer-songwriter?

After the release of the OST, I left the audition program. It was a large audition program in which idol trainees like me gathered and competed in one place. Shortly following the program, I quit trainee and started to stand alone as a singer-songwriter.

-It took a little while for me to go out on my own.

When I was young, I thought that I might only debut, but when I debuted, I had a lot of musical concerns. Apparently, I was a person who only danced and sang, so making a song itself was a burden. The fact that I had to confirm and proceed with all the work by myself also seemed to have contributed.

– Can I say that this was the most difficult time?

maybe? Shortly following I left the company, a slump came. I’ve only been an idol trainee for almost 5 years. I left the company with confidence in myself, but at some point I felt like those five years were meaningless, and I think the transition period has come. Still, I got a lot of strength from my family and those around me, and I think I overcame it naturally as I tried to trust myself more like I did when I first started making music.

-You released a new song ‘No Wave’ on the 9th.

The new song ‘No Wave’ is a song I worked on while living with my sister in Yangyang for a month last summer. At the time, I was addicted to surfing and asked to stay where there are waves, but there were really no waves. But even on days without waves, it was very attractive to me. I received a lot of energy and felt free while I was there, but this is a song I worked on without being limited by form as much as possible. The tracks consist only of guitar, but it’s fun to work on without being too refined.

-In the album introduction, I wrote the phrase ‘Catch the wave of the day’ by Hyewon Hyun instead. Were passages in this book inspired?

I usually like surfing, so I watch a lot of surfing-related videos, but I happened to read a book written by Hyewon Hyun. It was a song she was working on before the book was published, but reading that phrase really resonated with me. Although the waves have different shapes, the saying ‘Catch today’s waves and stand up strong’ should have been conveyed to many people.

– I’m curious regarding your impressions when you read this book. What did you find and feel?

By the time I read this book, I was so busy that I needed a break. So I think I wanted to read this book more, but it seemed like we were chatting while reading the book. It’s like surfing in the sea and just getting out and talking regarding dorando? It must have felt like you were talking to someone you might really talk to (laughs).

-Are you usually inspired by books when you work on music?

I’m usually a style that draws inspiration from experience. I think I’m the type to express what I experienced and felt. Sometimes something comes out of a book, but rather than the content, it seems to be a stepping stone so that my thoughts can be organized and solved better.

-What is ‘Today’s Wave’ to Yoo Ha-jeong?

Currently, to me, ‘today’s wave’ seems to be every day. I try to feel my own joy every day.

-Which part did you focus on the most while making ‘No Wave’?

I think the main focus was on the lyrics. How can we express it well? I think we focused a lot on that part because we wanted to express how we felt.

-What message did you want to convey through the lyrics?

The big title was ‘Freedom’. We started by writing out when we felt free. Wake up in the morning, talk, get into the sea and repeat. Then I came to express the current situation where I feel free.

– What was the most difficult part of the job?

I think the music video was the most difficult. There were a lot of changes, and I remember filming two days in a row in the early morning, winning everyone’s sleep. haha. This music video is an interesting video shot only with an iPhone. Thank you for your interest.

– Is there a reaction you want to hear from the public listening to this song?

I wish listeners of this song might take a break while listening to it. Our present life is always busy and hectic. I hope it will be a song to take a break for a while. Oh, and I like to listen to this song in the morning or at sunset (laughs).

– How would you describe your music in one word?

I do not know… I’ve never thought regarding it, but now I want my music to be a place where someone can take a break.

– I am looking forward to the music that Ha-jeong Yoo will play in the future. What musical direction do you have?

When working on lyrics or singing, I try to be as calm as possible. In the future, I want to make a song that can listen to someone’s story.

– Besides the album, you are working hard on YouTube. The YouTube channel name is very unique. Is it ‘two front teeth’ because you can see two front teeth when singing?

Ah yes. haha. The two front teeth feel like a characteristic of my face, so when I first decided on the channel name, I thought it was really simple. At that time, my Facebook ID was two front teeth (laughs).

-I’m uploading cover videos on ‘Two Front Teeth Song Log’. Do you have any most memorable songs? The impressive response is also good.

The black skirt’s ‘As Much As I Waited’ and the recently uploaded ‘Leisure’ by Jang Yeon-ju remain in my memory. When I was recording ‘More Than Waiting’, I remember the feeling of being immersed in the lyrics and my heart fluttered in my memory. It feels good because you like it like a song (laughs).

– Is there a cover song you would like to try? Or the artist you want to collaborate with.

There are so many artists I want to collaborate with. Someday, I want to sing with teacher Baekho Choi on stage.

-The travel vlog also contains a lot of fun daily life. How will travel affect Yoo Ha-jeong’s music?

Yes, I usually like to travel, so I often put it in a vlog. For me, travel is a driving force that gives me strength once more, and meeting unfamiliar environments and people broadens my horizons, which seems to have a lot of influence on my music.

-Finally, please tell us regarding Yoo Ha-jeong’s goals.

The goal is to make more diverse and fun music regardless of genre. I’m planning a single album following the release of ‘No Wave’, so please pay a lot of attention (laughs)
