Cleaning measures do not help
SBB apologize for faecal stench in train stations
In Zurich, the platforms once once more stink of faeces and rotten eggs. One of the culprits: shaking train Dosto. The SBB promise to do something regarding it.
It’s one of the most reliable SBB trains, but it has its very own scent – to put it nicely. Because the FV Dosto stinks tremendously of faeces and rotten eggs. Even if the train is no longer in the station, passengers know that it was there.
After two weeks ago there was a stinky smell on the platforms at Zurich main station, it is now also stinking on the underground tracks 31 – 34 at the Löwenstrasse underground station. So much so that the SBB have now put up a sign. Then the promise: “We have intensified the cleaning and will fix the cause as quickly as possible.”
Bacteria are just too weak
But why does the train give off such a bestial stench in the first place? The facilitation possibilities are to blame. The waste water is collected in tanks there, solid components are filtered out, collected and disposed of.
However, the liquids are subjected to a bioreactor cure with the help of bacteria, heated and finally lightened onto the tracks. The problem: The bacteria are simply too weak to destroy all the stench. The SBB already assured in July: “The SBB employees are busy adding a lot of fresh bacteria to the overloaded bacteria.”
«All surfaces are cleaned several times a day»
However, the Dosto trains are only one source of the stench, explains SBB spokesman Martin Meier to Blick. What exactly the other causes are, he does not want to explain further. However, Meier assures: “All surfaces in HB Zurich are cleaned several times a day. Even the track bed gets a wash, the underground stations Museumstrasse and Löwenstrasse several times a week.» (hey)
